Somen - Noodles for the summer months

The Japanese word men in general is used for your basic noodle. There are many different types of men. The most famous of which is Ra-men, which has become quite popular in America and sales are good because of its cheap price. Somen on the other hand could be considered the angel hair of ramen, except that somen is seasonal. The Japanese eat somen in the summer chilled in a bowl with its own special tare (sauce) similar to soy sauce. The noodles are very thin, like I said and there is no need to overcook. Just boil a couple of minutes, put ice in a bowl with the special tare and blam, instant summer meal that keeps the heat of the humid summers months off of you and instead offers a nice chilly summer meal. Try somen for you gourmet meal during your summer stay in the land of the rising sun, Japan.
